ENVIRONMENT & HEALTH
Huge dump trucks used in Olympic construction drive continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through Akhshtyr village to access two gravel quarries and a construction waste dump above the village. The heavy truck traffic causes layers of dust up to 5 inches (12 centimeters) thick to build up on the road, as well as Akhshtyr residents' houses, yards, and gardens. Residents complain the dust has caused respiratory problems and has adversely affected their properties, livestock, and agriculture. The speed at which the trucks often pass poses a danger for the residents, including children.
